PETALUMA, Sonoma County — October 30, 2026. A City of Petaluma project calls for improvements to pedestrian crossings and traffic signals at several locations along Sonoma Mountain Parkway and the intersection of East Madison Street and North McDowell Boulevard. The proposed construction would add or upgrade safety features for people walking, biking and driving in the area.
What improvements are described?
According to an official California Environmental Quality Act notice filed October 1, 2026, the Crosswalk and Signal Improvements project (C16502640) includes work on pedestrian crossings, guardrails, curb ramps and median refuge islands. It also identifies rapid-flashing beacons, updated signs and pavement markings.
The notice lists the work as accessibility and multimodal safety improvements; it does not claim there has been a specific recent crash at any of these intersections. Additional signals and curb features can help make crossings more legible, but motorists and pedestrians still need to follow on-site controls.
When could construction happen?
The state’s public notice anticipated work between October 2026 and January 2027, taking about 60 working days. That is a project-level estimate, not a promise that crews will appear at every intersection on a fixed date. The document anticipates temporary lane closures to accommodate construction and says the plan does not involve widening beyond the existing right of way.
Residents commuting through the corridors should consult current city notices or posted work-zone signs rather than assume a particular block is closed. This report does not assert that construction has already begun or been completed at an individual crossing.
How to check progress
The state project record includes the official project description and environmental filing. For schedules, contract details and site-specific restrictions, consult the City of Petaluma public works and project updates. Drivers should slow down through any active work zone and make room for pedestrians using temporary crossings.
